Plastic has become a part of life as much as drinking water. In fact, much of the water that is purchased in the United States is packaged in plastic. Plastic has been a part of daily existence in the United States since the 1950s. It was first invented in 1862, when Alexander Parkes introduced an organic compound made from cellulose. This compound could be molded while hot, but held its shape while cool. If this, along with the organic cellulose compounds that followed, were the type of plastics that ultimately became a part of everyday life, the health risks from plastic wouldn’t be a current concern. Unfortunately, the more natural cellulose product was not chosen for popular use.
The plastic materials that became common were polyethylene compounds—a compound that is the result of a reaction between ethylene and benzaldyhde. Polyethylene was the first plastic in the United States to sell more than a billion pounds a year. It is found everywhere—in soda bottles, milk jugs, grocery bags, dry cleaning bags, canned food linings, and in packaging for many other types of foods and storage containers. There are also PVC plastics, found in our pipes, baby bottles, and baby toys. Plastic has become as American as apple pie. Yet modern plastics pose significant, possibly deadly, health risks.
Two compounds in plastic, BPA and phthalates, have been linked to serious health conditions in numerous studies. The EPA and FDA have refused to accept these studies, but the labs carrying out the studies are all well respected and the studies have held up to significant peer review.
