Dozens of studies completed during the decades since software development became a discipline have shown that the vast majority of software projects fail to deliver into the given schedule and budget, and with the the required level of quality. According to a study published in 2009 by the Standish Group, the failure rate is 68%, which shows just a very slight decrease since the first report in 1994 when the failure rate was 84%.
Extensive research has been done in an attempt to identify means to improve the success rate of software development projects. There are several common denominators for success that have emerged from all studies, as well as some ineffective management or development practices that occur so often that they can easily be called “classic mistakes.”
As in the inspired quote from Lawrence J. Peter, "If you don't know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else."
